Screening/Diagnostic Mammograms

Mammography is a specialized medical imaging technique that uses a low-dose x-ray system to see inside the breasts. A mammography exam called a mammogram, helps in the early detection and diagnosis of breast diseases. We use the latest mammography technology to limit radiation exposure.

Scheduling
Please call UCSF Radiology Scheduling (415) 353-3900 to schedule your exam. Interpreting services are available for all patients. Please let us know if you want an interpreter when scheduling your exam.

Directions, Parking, and Transportation
Please visit our website for directions, parking, and transporation information. https://radiology.ucsf.edu/locations

Prior to the Exam
Images taken from other breast imaging exams are important for the doctor to look for changes in the breast tissue. If you have prior mammography images taken at a non-UCSF facility, please bring them with you to your exam or upload your images at https://radiology.ucsf.edu/send-images-ucsf-radiology

Preparation for the Exam
We recommend you wear a two-piece outfit as you will be asked to change into a hospital gown. Please do not use deodorants, baby powder, or perfumes, as they can interfere with the image quality.

During the Exam
You will be asked to change into a hospital gown for most exams. The technologist will verify your identification and the exam requested. The exam duration will vary, but the average is about 30 minutes. The technologist will position you and give you instructions. During your mammogram, pressure will be applied while taking the images. You may feel some discomfort, but this pressure is essential to obtain high-quality images, and the pressure will not damage your breast tissue.

After the Exam
You may be asked to schedule another appointment for further evaluation. If you are recommended a biopsy, you can visit http://tiny.ucsf.edu/breastbiopsy for more information.

Your Imaging Results
Your mammogram will be interpreted by a UCSF radiologist, a doctor trained to interpret breast imaging. The radiologist will write a report with the results of your exam. After the report is finalized - typically within two to five working days - you can access this report and your images in MyChart (fastest option). Or you can request your report and images from our UCSF Imaging Library. Learn more at https://radiology.ucsf.edu/patient-care/ for-patients/radiology-library-patients To sign up for MyChart use the following link https://www.ucsfhealth.org/mychart. Please contact MyChart Customer Service at (415) 514-6000 if you need assistance. For help understanding your images and report, please contact the provider who placed your imaging order.
